Start with where the furniture will be used and stored. A covered balcony, an exposed garden and a portable campsite each place different demands on weight, moisture resistance and maintenance. Compare the complete product, not just the name of its main material.

For metal furniture, ask about the frame, joints, finish and care instructions. For timber, discuss the species, protective finish and storage expectations. For fabric, consider breathability, cleaning and replacement options. Request a sample in the intended configuration so you can assess appearance and everyday handling before placing an order.

A folding product should be straightforward to open, close, carry and store. When reviewing a sample, look at the folded dimensions alongside the usable seat or tabletop size. Check whether handles, bags and loose components suit the way customers will transport it.

Review the locking mechanism and instructions, the feel of contact surfaces, and the stability of the assembled product on its intended surface. Confirm the specified load limit instead of judging strength by appearance. Packaging is part of the experience too: agree protection for edges and moving parts, assembly instructions and the replacement-parts information your customers will need.

OEM and ODM describe different starting points for a manufacturing project. With OEM, a buyer typically brings an established design or specification. With ODM, a buyer starts from a manufacturer’s existing design capability or product platform and agrees the required changes.

Before choosing a route, set out your market, intended use, target quantity, material preferences and schedule. Clarify which drawings, samples and specifications will be approved, and who is responsible for design ownership, tooling and testing. Record the agreed materials, dimensions, packaging and inspection criteria before production. The right route is the one that matches the project brief and the responsibilities both parties have agreed.
